Magnan Projects is pleased to present the following group of distinguished and up and coming artists for our Summer Group Exhibition which will be on view from July 02 - August 02, 2008.
Alexandre Arrechea:Trinidad, Cuba 1970. Graduated from the “Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA)” in Havana in 1994. For twelve years he was a member of the art collective Los Carpinteros, until he left the group in July of 2003 to continue his career as a solo artist.
Ameila Biewald: Received a B.F.A. degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and studied fine art and theory at Goldsmith’s College at the University of London. She earned an M.F.A. degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The recipient of many awards and fellowships, Biewald received a 2004 residency fellowship from the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. She has exhibited widely in the midwest and taught at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is an adjunct professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
Tony Ingrisano: Is concerned with creating a unique language through which one may find new ways of communicating. This language uses an ever-increasing vocabulary that offers a unique lens through which to view the world we live in. I seek to expand the accepted modes of exchange, allowing new methods to disseminate, translate, and transfer information. One primary concern of the drawings is that of addressing the increasing incongruities in the ways humans look at, deal with, and exist within our surroundings. The line between what is and should remain natural, and what aspects of our world we inject technology and bioengineering into blurs further every minute. Within this connection humans have discovered myriad beneficial opportunities, but with this must come the responsibility of questioning what actions are within moral boundaries with concern to not only protecting our environment but symbiotically co-existing within a world which we depend on for survival.
Clive Murphy: Ireland, b. 1971. Attended and obtain a Master’s of Fine Art Degree, University of Ulster, Belfast with honors recieved his B.A. in Fine & Applied Art, University of Ulster, Belfast. 1993/96; National Diploma in Art and Design Galway R.T.C.
Maya Onoda: Receieved a Master of Fine Arts, Painting Program at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York and her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Painting and Drawing Major from
California State University-Fullerton (CSUF), CA.
Sean Slemon: Born in South Africa, graduated in 2007 at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Has a Masters in Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. Along with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art with Distinction, University of Cape Town, Michealis School of Fine Art, Cape Town in South Africa.
Rich Watts: I construct simple forms with complex functions and complex forms that perform simple tasks. Everything I produce is an experiment. Many of my ideas are conceived with nonsense and absurdity as points of departure, and often arrive at novel ways of imparting information. This information is sometimes practical and sometimes not, but often means something to somebody on some level. I delight in presenting objects that engage a person's child-like tendencies - to take pleasure in touching, hearing, and experiencing. My work is guided equally by intuition and technical practicality. I am fascinated by intrigues that appear at first superficial, but later reveal significant undercurrents in popular interest. I delight in mediocre and mundane tasks given significance through their automation, and I aspire to devise tools and signs that reveal something unexpected about their user.
